Coming very soon, finally

For those who have been waiting (I’ve been threatening to do this podcast for over a year) it is nearly here. Yes, that is right, the podcast is starting VERY SOON. I promise. 🙂

A Manifesto for Sustainability in Design

Came across this through PSFK: 1000 Words: A Manifesto for Sustainability in Design by Allan Chochinov. It is on a site about industrial design but, like all good design techniques, it can be applied to the creation of anything. Here are his main points:

  • * Hippocratic Before Socratic
  • * Stop Making Crap
  • * Systems Before Artifacts
  • * Teach Sustainability Early
  • * Screws Better Than Glues
  • * Design for Impermanence
  • * Balance Before Talents
  • * Metrics Before Magic
  • * Climates Before Primates
  • * Context Before Absolutely Everything

My favourite quotes:

“We think that we’re in the artifact business, but we’re not; we’re in the consequence business.”

“We have to start balancing our ability to be clever with our ability to be smart.”

eParticipation & Cross-Media

I found Chris’ blog on eParticipation through a referral (he linked to me), but it looks interesting.

One of my core interests is how the convergence of communication media will impact the way eParticipation projects are shaped in the future. Little research has been done on this, that’s why I’m closely following other fields, where the art and science of crossmedia interaction design is more advanced.

His thesis on public crossmedia particpation through two case-studies is online, but it is only in German at this stage. I look forward to reading more about your research Chris. 🙂
