A Manifesto for Sustainability in Design

Came across this through PSFK: 1000 Words: A Manifesto for Sustainability in Design by Allan Chochinov. It is on a site about industrial design but, like all good design techniques, it can be applied to the creation of anything. Here are his main points:

  • * Hippocratic Before Socratic
  • * Stop Making Crap
  • * Systems Before Artifacts
  • * Teach Sustainability Early
  • * Screws Better Than Glues
  • * Design for Impermanence
  • * Balance Before Talents
  • * Metrics Before Magic
  • * Climates Before Primates
  • * Context Before Absolutely Everything

My favourite quotes:

“We think that we’re in the artifact business, but we’re not; we’re in the consequence business.”

“We have to start balancing our ability to be clever with our ability to be smart.”
