Filmmakers that Think Outside the Film

Lance Weiler — an acclaimed director films such as Head Trauma (that I posted about here) and The Last Broadcast — asked me to write an article about films and cross-media for the Workbook Project (a free resource for content creators). Of course I agreed to! So, I wrote a long article about the some of nifty things filmmakers are doing with content across mediums. I include websites, graphic novels, remixes, blogs, books, ARGs and so on. It is called ‘Filmmakers that Think Outside the Film’. Actually, I’m thinking it would be good to do a series: TV Makers that Think Outside the TV, Book Writers… I’ve got tons of stuff for all of them! Let me know if you’ve got a site or magazine appropriate to house it.

But for now, check out the article. I haven’t included EVERYTHING but I’ve put alot in. In case I’ve missed something really important though, please leave me a comment either at the Workbook Project or here. I’d love to hear your suggestions.

OK, now for some light relief…this is sooooo cute

Sony announced at GDC earlier this year this wonderful game that is being developed by Media Molecule for Playstation 3: LittleBigPlanet.

It is described on the Media Molecule site as follows:

The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community.

Characters have the power to move anything in this glued and stitched-together landscape; they have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to play.

And here is the video which shows how easy it is to create content in the gameworld, content that is instantly created in a multiplayer space (ala Second Life).

It looks so well designed, and it is interesting that it is designed for “communal creativity” right down to the gameworld (a world of hand-made characters and settings), but gee it is soooo cute. I want the soundtrack!

Thanks for the heads up Leslie

Sean Cubitt

News from Adrian’s blog is that Sean Cubitt has a blog. Now, Sean’s writing is not for the faint at heart but for the strong of mind. Eg:

The multidimensional mysteries facing the analyst of light in the early 21st century are neither more nor less characteristic of our times than the explorations of Groseteste or the indications of Newton were to theirs. The answer, the first part of the answer, to the question “What is Light?” is “Light has a history”, not only as practice, nor even as an experience, but as an idea. Informing and informed by technologies and techniques, evidence and sensation, light changes. [Light 2]
